CABE Festival Centrepiece

In May 2008 Block installed a ninety-five feet high nickel-plated pylon in Birmingham city centre. The pylon is the centrepiece to the UK’s first dedicated climate change festival run and commissioned by CABE — the government’s commission for architecture and the built environment.

A twentieth century energy icon, the pylon forces us to consider twenty-first century energy consumption within our cities and invites a re-appraisal of the way they are designed, constructed and inhabited. Sited in a ten-by-ten square metre cornfield, its reflective coating also challenges default notions of beauty, utility and the surreal. The pylon will be in Victoria Square from the 30th of May to the 9th of June.
